Michael Smith is General Manager & Senior Vice President, Cooking Channel at Scripps Networks Interactive, where he oversees programming and marketing for the Food Network spin-off Cooking Channel. Michael has been with Scripps Networks for the last 15 years, guiding the creative, advertising and brand strategies in marketing and creative roles, previously holding multiple marketing titles, including Senior Vice President of Marketing for Food Network.
Michael Smith’s marketing and creative teams have won several industry awards over the span of his tenure, including the prestigious Brand Builder Award from Promax in 2003 and NAMIC's Luminary honors. Additionally, Smith’s also been named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Minorities in Cable every year since 2007.
Prior to Food Network, Michael worked for Disney/ABC Cable Networks in a variety of sales, marketing and programming roles, both domestically and in Asia, including serving as Executive Director of On-Air Promotion for Disney Channel. Previously he worked for the CBS Television Network in affiliate relations, and at Young and Rubicam Advertising as an account executive.
Michael began his media career in 1985 as a summer intern in the 4A’s Minority Advertising Internship Program working at Ogilvy and Mather. He credits programs like MAIP, that introduce college level students to the media industry, as providing him the break he needed to pursue his dreams, and he continues to support similar programs and organizations committed to helping bright students enter the media industry.
Smith received an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology and Society from Stanford University in 1984 and his MBA from the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in 1986.
A native of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, Smith grew up in Jamaica, West Indies.
