Session - The Broad Range of Media Careers in Content, Business and Technology
Richard Buchanan is Vice President, Strategic Development for Comcast Technology Solutions, a division of Comcast Cable offering third-party businesses access to services and technologies developed and proven by an industry leader.

In this role, Buchanan leads the large customer engagement and strategic planning for the CTS portfolio of services. As a member of the CTS Leadership Team, Buchanan is also responsible for bringing customer input and market information into the organization providing strategic counsel on innovations that drive forward looking competitive initiatives.

From content distribution and media management to advertising delivery and IP services, the CTS portfolio helps businesses launch exciting new products to their customers and remain competitive. CTS customers minimize their up-front costs and benefit from improved efficiency and faster time to market by taking advantage of the company’s infrastructure innovations and intellectual capital.

Buchanan is a well-known industry leader and contributes to the continual advancement of the broadcast industry. Under his leadership in Operations and Engineering; Comcast Wholesale received four Engineering Excellence Awards from 2011-2013 for innovative solutions it developed for leading content providers in the industry. He is a frequent executive speaker, including participating as a keynoter and executive leadership panelist for such event as the Henry Stewart DAM (Digital Asset Management) conferences., NAB, IBC, the Technology Leadership Summit, Sports Video Conference, Hispanic TV Summit and the On Demand Summit.

Buchanan has more than 30 years of operations management experience in video production and content delivery solutions for the entertainment and enterprise markets. Prior to joining Comcast in 2007 as its Vice President of Content Solutions, he served as Chief Operating Officer for Ascent Media Management Services (AMMS). Before joining AMMS in 2005, he spent nine years as Senior Vice President of Operations and Business Development for Crown Media International, which owned and operated the Hallmark Channel. Buchanan has also served as Vice President of Production and Creative Services at Encore Media, where he helped to launch Starz! and seven thematic multiplex channels. Over the last 15 years, he has launched a total of 75 channels worldwide.

Buchanan attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied mass communication with a specialization in broadcasting, and Colorado State University’s process management program.
